The Italian Immigration in the City of Rockford.

The History of the Italian immigration to Rockford goes back more than 100 years. In a certain sense, it is still a history being made. However, it is easy to identify in this brief article two great phases. The first, in which the Italian migratory current was a small steam, began in 1878 with the Maffioli family.The second, in which the stream becomes a surging wave, began later and continued into the 1920's when millions of Italians, principally from Central and Southern Italy, moved abroad.

Immediately after the first World War, there would have been anther wave of immigration if it had not been stopped by restrictive legislation passed by Congress which set the Italian quota at 5,666 immigrants per year (quota system). The law of 1965 (Immigration Reform Act) abandoned the quota system, an injustice against which the Order Sons of Italy in America fought for many years. Since then more than 20,000 Italians have entered the United States yearly. According to 2005 government statistics, almost 10,000 Rockford households are of Italian origin.

The immigrants settled in two areas (Madison street and South Rockford.) This permitted them to defend themselves against the prejudice of the native Americans and to preserve the customs and habits which they brought from there place of origin. This also made them feel less isolated in a world so different in language, religion and traditions. Indeed, Father Anthony Marchesano came to Rockford in 1905 for the sole reason of helping of the immigrated Italians. Father Marchesano gave leadership for the foundation of the church and parish of St. Anthony of Padua.

Americans of Italian origin have contributed greatly to the economic, political and professional life of Rockford. Their deep feeling of family traditions grows stronger every day.

L'immigrazione Italiana Nella Citta Di Rockford

La storia della emigrazione italiana a Rockford ha quindi piu' di un secolo. Si tratta di una storia, in un certo senso, tutto da fare. Tuttavia e' facile individare in questo breve articolo due grandi fasi. La prima, in cui la corrente migratoria italiana e un rivoletto, incomincio' me, 1878 con la famiglia Maffoli. la seconda, in cui il rivolo diventa un' onda di piena che va da circa il 1880 agli ani '20 di questo secolo quando millioni di Italiani, principalmente dall'Italia meridionale, si trasferirono all'estero.

Immediatamente dopo la prima guerra mondiale ci sarebbe un'altra ondata di emigrazione se non fosse stata arrestata da una legislazione restrettiva votata del Congesso che fisso' la quota Italiana 5,666 immigranti all' anno. Il recente cenismento di 1980 calcolo' il numero di cittadini in Rockford con uno ambi i genitori di oriunda italiana tra 30 a 35 mila.

Il raggrupamento degli emigrati italiani in due zone(Madison Street and South Rockford). permise loro difendersi contro i pregiudizi Degli Americani nativi e di conservare le abitudini e i costumiche avevano portato dai loro loughi di originee li fece sentire menosoli in un modo cosi' differente per lingua, religione e tradizione. Gia' il padre Antonino Marchesano era Venuto a Rockford nel 1905 al solo scopo di assistere gli emigrati italiani. A padre Marchesano si deve la chiesa a parrochia Italiana di Sant'Antonio di Padova.

Il Contibuto Degli Americani di origine Italiano di Rockford alla vita economica, della politica e ai vari settori professionali; il senso profododella famiglia intesa come centro della vita individuale e sociale, diventa ogni giorno sempre piu' forte.
